Where Tradition Meets the Outdoors: Story from Ontario

Where Tradition Meets the Outdoors: Benn's Cottage Rentals and Guide Service in Mitchell’s Bay, Ontario For generations, Mitchell’s Bay, Ontario has been a destination for people who love the outdoors. For Scott Benn and his wife Michelle it’s more than a great place to fish and hunt—it’s home, family, and a tradition that stretches back more than 150 years. Scott recently purchased property in Mitchell’s Bay that has been in his mother’s family since 1870. After acquiring this property in 2024 Scott began renovating it with a vision of continuing a family tradition that has always centered around welcoming sportsmen to the area. A Family Tradition Since 1870 The property has a special place in Scott’s heart and his family history. His grandfather was the local game warden working for the Department of Lands and Forests in the mid 1900’s then retiring (from the DLF) and then spearheading the construction of the St.Annes hunt club on Walpole Island and catered to many of the same fishermen and duck hunting families who continue to travel to Mitchell’s Bay today. For decades, sportsmen from Michigan , Ohio , Kentucky and all across the United States have made the trip north to experience the incredible fishing and waterfowl hunting that Southwestern Ontario and Mitchell’s Bay has to offer. Guests can find welcoming accommodations in either Benn’s larger 9 bed / 2 bath guest house or their smaller comfortable 3 bed / 1 bathroom Bunky. Today, Scott is building on that legacy through Benn Cottage Rentals and Scott Benn Outdoors, offering visitors a place to stay, access to outstanding outdoor opportunities, and a genuine connection to the area. A Destination for Fishermen and Duck Hunters Mitchell’s Bay is ideally situated for those looking to spend time on the water kayaking , fishing or in the marsh during the great fall migration. Scott Benn Outdoors caters to both fisherman’s and waterfowl hunters. Scott offers some guided fishing trips and fall duck hunts, sharing his knowledge of the area and helping guests experience the outdoors that has made the region such a popular destination. More Than Just a Place to Stay The newly renovated property offers cottage rentals for visitors traveling to Mitchell’s Bay. For many guests, having a comfortable place to stay close to the action is an important part of the experience. But Scott hopes the property offers something more—a connection to the history and character of the area. There is something special about staying on a property that has been part of our family for more than a century and a half. The same land that welcomed sportsmen visiting Scott’s grandparents generations ago is now welcoming a new generation of fishermen and hunters.
