How to put a Fowl Foolers Head on a Herters Body

New Head on an Old Foam Block

We get calls just about everyday of the week asking about our heads and decoy components. Typically, most customers are wondering if our heads will fit onto the various Herters bodies. We do this so often here at the shop for customers that send in their old Herters blocks to get wrapped, we thought we should share the details so more Foamers could do this on their own.

Modifying our extremely robust decoy heads to work with Herters Decoys is a very simple process, which you can easily do at home. Fowl Foolers heads have 5 prongs on the underside. The middle prong takes the screw which comes up through the keel and holds the head on to the decoy. The four other prongs dig into the decoy to form a good connection and to prevent the head from moving.

To transform our head into a head that is more similar to the Herters style decoy heads you will first need to cut off the four outer prongs that would normally hold the decoy head into place and prevent motion. After you have cut off the four prongs, you will need to enlarge the screw hole in the center of the middle prong so that your eye bolt can fit into the head. You will do this using a 7/32” drill bit.

Once you have enlarged the hole, take your ¼” eyebolt, put it through the body, and screw the head on. The bolt will thread itself as it enters into the head.

Our Small Heads, Swimmer/Sleeper Duck Heads, Wood Duck Drake Heads, Wood Duck Hen Heads, High Heads, Low Heads, Diver Heads, and Resting Heads look best on Herters Model 63 Decoys.

Our High Heads, Low Heads, Diver Heads, and Resting Heads look best on Herters Model 72 Decoys.

Our High Heads, Low Heads, and Diver Heads look best on Herters Model 81 Decoys. You can modify our Upright Good Heads, Swimmer/Sleeper Goose Heads, and Bent Neck Goose Heads for Model 81s as well, but we recommend leaving the 4 prongs to give the goose heads additional stability.

I hope this helps those of you that are interested in using our heads on your old Herters foam blocks. As always, if you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out me at david@fowlfoolers.com for more information!

Enjoy!
