The canvasback, named for the beige coloration of its body feathers, is a bottom feeder, diving to capture the wild plants and small animals that inhabit lakes and marshes. Canvasbacks winter on the east and west coasts of the United States and Mexico but breed in Canada and Alaska. Another kind of duck, the redhead, often adds its own eggs to the nest the canvasback builds in clumps of tall grasses. Canvasbacks are popular game birds.
